About EVS

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) is a program offered by the European Union to all people aged 18-30. Main focus is on the process of intercultural learning by sending young people to different countries of Europe, where they will work as volunteers in a project of their own choice. The EVS spans a wide range of working areas, including projects about culture, sports, the environment, youth, social care, cultural heritage, the arts, civil protection, development co-operation, etc.
Depending on the wishes of the volunteer and his/her hosting organisation the stay abroad can have a duration between 2 and 12 months.

EVS at Hald Internasjonale Senter
As a meeting place for cross-cultural understanding and international work, Hald Internasjonale Senter is interested in cooperation with people from all over the world. Involvement in EVS offers us the chance to include the European countries in our work.
The volunteers are supposed to assist the staff at Hald, doing office and practical work, teaching, participating in marketing for the school or arranging diverse activities for the students of our programs. As Mandal established a centre for asylum seekers in 2009, volunteers may also contribute to the work of this institution in many different ways, for instance in the kindergarten for asylum seekers. Both, work at HIS and at the centre for asylum seekers, includes a lot of different learning opportunities, especially in the field of intercultural work with young people.
In February 2010 Hald Internasjonale Senter has received the first EVS-volunteer, which is staying for six month. In future we are planning to host two volunteers for a period of one year. The 9th of August two new volunteers from Germany and Hungary arrived. They will stay for one year.

Application and process:
Everyone is free to apply at HIS, but the following skills and qualities will be highly appreciated:- Language skills in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Chinese
- Computer skills
- Identifying with christian values
- Extrovert, outgoing and trustworthy character
- Responsibility, maturity and independence
- Being able to facilitate different activities like sports, music, games, etc.
- Teaching skills

Together, staff members at Hald will chose the volunteers for our project. When accepted at Hald, we have to apply at the National Agency to get the permission for our project. This will take between one and two months.

Finances and accommodation
Participation in the EVS program is free. Volunteers are provided with food, accommodation, insurance cover, travel costs and pocket money (the amount of money depends on the hosting country).
Volunteers will live in the students’ dormitory at Hald and have a single bedroom with shared kitchen, washing and laundry facilities. While the students a placed at Hald, volunteers will be provided with meals at Hald. The rest of the year they will receive a monthly food allowance.
We offer a language course in Norwegian language to all volunteers in this project.
